Bible reading challenge day #7

Great is His steadfast love. His faithfulness endures forever.

1 Praise the Lord, all nations!
    Extol him, all peoples!
For great is his steadfast love toward us,
and the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever.
Praise the Lord!

Psalm 117

Today’s text I picked is the shortest Psalm I know, Psalm 117. There are two big characteristics of God sandwiched between ‘praise to God’ in this Psalm: His steadfast love, which I discussed a bit more yesterday and His faithfulness. Not just faithfulness, but faithfulness that endures forever. for ever. That’s a long time.

Our human heads are not created to grasp the concept of endlessness, eternity. Even if we can somewhat imagine what eternity of Heaven would mean, we cannot understand what it means that God always was. Very existential questions start to come up like: was God ever lonely, is that why he created the universe with us in it? Why did God not create the earth 10000 years earlier? Things like that.

So His faithfulness. It endures forever and has lasted forever, if that’s correct English at all, I suppose you get what I mean. Why would God be faithful at all to us tiny sinning creatures? We can’t even be trustworthy to each other? Because God loved the world (John 3:16) and He loved us first (1 John 4:19), that’s why we love and can say: Praise to God. Note to self: I should read 1 John, I think it’s a great book, but I never read it front to back.

Anyway, I thought this was a nice one to end the week with. Thanks to my buddy and brother in Christ Victor Nunez for challenging me, it was a very enlightening experience indeed. God bless and see you soon.
